Slow goin’

Miles melt very slowly away on Highway 1 as it binds together towns with populations not exceeding three digits.  Add to this, the number of Prius poking along at half of the average 40 miles/hour allowed and being staunch in their refusal to use the turn-outs provided, and I might be found guilty of wondering why I chose this route.

And then…the next bend reveals more of the California coast and puts everything right with the world.

Mendocino was today’s breakfast stop.  It’s the kind of town in which I’d not be surprised to bump into Carly Simon.

Point Arena and its lighthouse served as the next quick photo-op.

Barbecued oysters in Bodega Bay proved hard to resist, but then I remembered that I’m traveling solo with two more nights on the road.  The encroaching fog made me glad that I shot a few photos earlier.

As it turned out, the fog shrouded me for much of the rest of the day, across the Golden Gate, through San Francisco and all the way to a very late arrival in Santa Cruz.  Yep, that’s Santa Cruz, the town that contested the trademarks owned by Huntington Beach for the right to exclusively call itself “Surf City”.

With luck, Goleta should frame tomorrow’s sunset.

  1. Rich love the pic of the lighthouse! My weakness since I have to check them out every time I go to shorelines. Didn’t you visit the bro and family while up north?

  2. I would have stopped abruptly at BBQ Oysters (and a few beers), and ceased all travel until the next morning!
