Yoyo Day
Call me Duncan because today I felt like a yoyo by several measures. I went to sleep last night dreading today’s weather forecast of severe thunderstorms and wind. I woke to find clear skies but, I’ve been fooled by this before. However, no such weather arrived, just a day of high humidity and record temps (but it was a wet-heat!). So with raised spirits I plodded along today’s tracks. Beginning in Bloomington IL, I followed the main track, the alternate alignments, and alternates-of-the-alternates leading me through Springfield IL and as far south as Hamel IL. Then I yoyo’d my way back up to Springfield IL by covering the last planned track of the day. That left me well positioned to explore one of River Pilot’s alternates tomorrow which will lead me east and then south for 65 miles, and not too far from my southern progress of today. I was surprised to log 258 miles for today, because it felt like slow-goin’ for much of the time. Tomorrow should yield the balance of IL, a crossing of the Mississippi (again) and then some of the spider web of tracks surrounding St. Louis MO, the good Lord willing and the Mississippi don’t rise.
So, how many more of you failed to see the ice cream cone on the rusted out sign in yesterday’s post? Yes, it was the ice cream that brought “joy to so many of the children for so many years.” Arturo, have another look.
